Any New York City family that wants a pre-K seat for their four-year-old can now access one, free of charge. This expansion of universal pre-K is a huge achievement for Mayor de Blasio’s administration and a win for the nearly 70,000 families with four-year-olds currently enrolled—but how do we ensure that this important investment is sustained, and what comes next?
What will it take to sustain funding for universal pre-K? What are the benefits of funding universal programs that provide access across the economic spectrum? And could New York City become a model for the rest of the country as we approach the 2016 presidential campaign?
