Century Foundation senior fellow Barton Gellman was honored with two Emmy wins at the 36th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony on Monday night. Gellman was recognized for his work as an editorial consultant on PBS Frontline’s documentary The United States of Secrets. The documentary, which took a critical look at the U.S. government’s massive digital surveillance program, received an Emmy in two categories: Best Documentary and Outstanding Coverage of a Current News Story—Long Form.

“We were thrilled to hear of Bart’s achievement,” said TCF president Mark Zuckerman. “Bart has long been at the forefront of national dialogue on digital surveillance in America. Revelations on extensive government spying documented in his reporting on the Snowden leak for the Washington Post helped to catapult this issue onto the national—and international—stage. His Emmy wins are just the latest in an impressive list of honors that Bart’s groundbreaking research and reporting on the national security state has received over the years.”

In 2013, Gellman was one of three journalists to acquire an archive of NSA documents from former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. In 2014, Gellman led coverage by the Washington Post that shared the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Gellman is currently working on his third book, which will examine the surveillance industrial complex.
